Laurel uses many brands of pastels, both hard and soft, but is especially fond of sennelier colors. Her working surface is a revolutionary new panel called pastelbord. It enables the artist to achieve a level of realism that none of the other commercial papers allow. Each portrait is executed by hand without any projective techniques.
She likes to identify the character and mood of the subject; and she looks for the inner qualities and just the right expression to convey the personality of the model. Of course, the emphasis is always on exquisitely drawn and rendered quality results.
"I love to depict the drama of light and shadows. I think this is what keeps the viewer captivated and gives each completed portrait a unique quality. I really enjoy using vibrant pigments. They allow me to achieve beautiful luminous mid-tones and textured highlights. I believe the backgrounds should be kept simple and soft to keep from distracting the viewer's focus from the subject."
Laurel gets good results working primarily from numerous reference photos or from your favorite family album picture.
